What this site records

Two things, and they are different in kind. Anonymous usage data from everyone, described first, which identifies nobody. And your email address, only if you asked for alerts, described in its own section below. If you have never signed up for alerts, the second section does not apply to you and this site holds nothing that could identify you.

Anonymous usage data

Collected from every visit, so we can tell which parts of this are useful and which county to build next.

• Which page you are on, and which site you came from, if any.
• Which things you click. Which county you choose, which documents you open, which filters you use, which links you follow away from here.
• If you use the tier calculator: whether you worked from a metered figure, case production or tonnage, a rough ratio range such as "5 to 7", and a volume band such as "30k to 300k". Neither figure you type is recorded. Your production volume never leaves your browser, and the water to wine ratio is reduced to one of four ranges before anything is sent, or to a marker meaning you did not give one.
• Your browser window size, so we can tell whether the layout is working on phones.
• A country and state code, derived by our host from your connection.

Where this site collects less than our policy allows

Our privacy policy permits collecting IP address, browser type, device type, pages viewed and access times, and permits cookies strictly necessary for signing in to the client portal. This site does less than that, deliberately:

• No cookies at all. None are set, so there is no cookie banner and nothing to consent to.
• Your IP address is never stored. It is used once, in memory, to produce a short one way hash so a returning visit can be told from a new one within a single day. The salt for that hash changes daily, so the value cannot recognize anyone tomorrow. The address itself is never written down.
• No third party trackers of any kind. No analytics service, no advertising pixels, no social widgets. The collector is ours and the data goes to our own database.
• Nothing is gated. No page, document, calculator result or alert on this site requires an address. The signup is an offer, never a toll, and nothing is held back from anyone who ignores it.
• One item in browser storage, a random session identifier held in sessionStorage, which lets several clicks in one visit count as one visit. It is not a cookie, it contains nothing about you, and your browser discards it when you close the tab.

Usage records are kept for up to 24 months and then deleted.

If you sign up for alerts

The alert list is the one place this site holds something that identifies you. You are on it only because you typed an address and then clicked a link in an email to confirm it. Here is everything in that record:

• Your email address. Stored lowercased. It is used to send the alerts and for nothing else.
• The regional board you picked, if you picked one. It is optional, and it is there so we can avoid sending you news about a board that does not hold you. That is the only thing the form asks for besides your email address.
• When you signed up, when you confirmed, and when you last received something.
• Which part of the site you signed up from, as a short label such as “alerts-band”. Not a full address, and never a link you followed.
• Two random tokens, one that confirms your signup and one that unsubscribes you in a single click. They are unguessable and they are not derived from anything about you.
• A one-way daily digest of your network address, the same rotating value described above, used to stop the form being hammered. It is meaningless the next day. As everywhere else on this site, the address itself is never stored.

Two lists, two consents, and they do not meet

The alert list is not BCG Water’s client list, and an address on one never moves to the other. Asking to be told when the Winery Order changes is not asking to hear from a consultancy’s sales side, and treating those as one permission would be exactly the sort of thing this site exists to warn people about. They are separate stores with separate rules, the separation is enforced in the database rather than by habit, and we will not sell, rent or share the alert list with anyone.

Confirming, and what happens if you do not

We email you once to confirm, because anyone can type anyone’s address into a public form and an unconfirmed address is somebody else’s until proven otherwise. If you never click that link we never email you again, and the unconfirmed record is deleted 30 days after the link expires. The link itself is good for 14 days.

Stopping, and being erased. Not the same request

Every alert carries a one-click unsubscribe that needs no account and no reply. That marks you as unsubscribed and we never email you again. The record stays, deliberately, so that a later signup is not confused for a new one and so we can show the request was honoured.

If you would rather we held nothing at all, that is a different and stronger request and you are entitled to it. Email compliance@bcgwater.com and we will delete the row outright and tell you it is done. Unlike the usage data, this one we can find.

A limit worth being straight about

California residents have the right to request deletion of personal information. For the usage data above there is nothing to delete on request, because none of it is linked to anything that could identify you. We could not find your records if we tried. Two things are different: if you are on the alert list we hold your address and can delete it on request, and if you have emailed us, that correspondence is identifiable and we can find and delete it. Ask at compliance@bcgwater.com for either.

On the guidance itself

Our terms of use say it plainly and it is worth repeating here, because this site gives regulatory information people may act on. Everything here is general. It is not engineering advice, legal advice, or a compliance determination for any specific facility. The tier calculator produces an estimate, not a determination. Your category and your deadlines are set by your regional water board and communicated in your own permit or Notice of Applicability, not by this page.

Where published sources disagree with each other, we mark the conflict on the page rather than quietly picking a side, and where something comes from a secondary source we label it unverified. That labeling tells you which statements you can lean on and which you should confirm before acting on them. Please use it.
